Procrastination Monster

I just had to share these pics. Can you guess what the object in these pics is? Here's a hint: in this case, it represents procrastination.

If you haven't figured it out yet, it's the lint from a dryer vent!! Can you imagine how long that vent had gone without cleaning? They're funny pics, but could have caused major problems, such as fire. Thankfully, all it caused was a reduction in drying time, which while not deadly, was costly. The procrastination monster required one load of clothes to be dried 3 times!! Ouch for that electric bill!!

I often read a small town paper online called the Daily Herald. In the opinion section, there is something called Sound Off! The purpose is for readers to share comments about what matters to them, ranging from topics about life in the city, politics and personal pet peeves, to compliments and complaints. I thoroughly enjoy reading Sound Off! and decided to offer something similar to you, my faithful followers. I love it!! In Sound Off! readers are encouraged to stay on topic, be respectful and the use of foul or obscene language, personal attacks or uses of another's identity to post are not allowed. The rules for what I am calling "Let Go!! with Dr. D. Clutter™" are the same. Every Friday is our official Let Go!! w/Dr. D. Clutter™ day. I'll post your advice, ideas, stories and thoughts. It'll be a place for you to share your life management and organization issues as well as discuss life events that inspire, empower or bother you. You can "leave it all here", as long as you follow the rules I discussed above. All comments will be reviewed before posting. So get ready, get set and Let Go!! w/Dr. D. Clutter™.

Easy and Positive

Remember my post about finding something good in your life everyday (September 21, 2009)? Well, here's another challenge. Focus on finding easy and positive things that bring you joy. Doing so should not cost you a great deal of money. In fact look for things that are free, or if you must invest, make it under $10. Please send me your ideas. I'd love to share them with others.

The Hamster Wheel

I've never had a hamster as a pet (it's a rodent-yuck!!), but I've seen them on their little wheels, just going around and around and around. You get my point. Sometimes our lives can be like that. We get in a rut and stay there, going around and around and around. If you find yourself on the hamster wheel of life, get off immediately!! Do something different; meet someone new. Whatever it takes to inject change in to you life, do it (within legal and moral realms of course). Break the cycle.

Cumulative

Life is a series of cumulative events. Some people or events enter our lives to remain for a long time, while others are only for a brief moment. Some people or events bring us happiness, fill us with joy and infuse our lives with positive memories, while others cause sadness, rob us of joy and heap on negativity. Here are a few questions I have for you. Which people and events have shaped your life the most? Which events do you tend to focus on and why? Is your life filled with happy remembrances or regret? Think on it.

Credit Where Credit is Due

This is simple and straightforward. Check your credit report!! I know they suggest checking once a year, but I check mine more often than that. My credit is important to me and I take great care to maintain it, but I have found multiple errors-yes multiple, on mine in the past, which were not my fault. So, I'm extremely diligent in checking and suggest you jump on the diligent boat too. It's a hassle to prove that you're not the person who opened an account or that you pay your bills on time, but if you've kept your financial record in order, it's much easier. Of course, "easier" is relative because it's still a pain, but at least you have the documentation to support your claim.

Your Focus?

I love watching planes as they take off and land (Haines Point, again). It’s peaceful and helps me focus. I do some of my most creative thinking during this time. What do you do that helps you focus?

Family Choice

Wouldn't it be nice if we could choose our family? That way, we could pick brothers who would be dependable, or sisters who remember to call in the time of crisis. Maybe we'd choose an aunt or uncle who would never forget your birthday (or name for that matter), and parents with whom you would always see eye to eye. Well, wake up and stop dreaming because it's not reality. We are born into the families we are born into; we don't get to choose in most instances. So, either learn to live with your families "special traits" or distance yourself from them. The first is most preferable. But the latter, is sadly a choice you'll have to make if drama, turmoil and stress are always present.

Tap It

I can’t take credit for this one since I’ve seen it on television and on the Internet, but I wanted to share it with you. If you’re having difficulty with cravings, tap your forehead with your fingers and watch your fingers as you do. It’s supposed to help reduce your desires and cravings. Think about it this way, it’s simply a way to distract you from the thoughts of food (or anything else). Now, of course, if you’re doing it while sitting in front of the last piece of pie, you probably won’t be as successful. Let me know if it worked.

Love to Move?

I love to exercise. Okay, most days I love to exercise. Okay, most days, I thoroughly enjoy exercising. Okay, honestly I do it to maintain my sanity, weight and health. Despite my lack of total love for exercising, I actually feel badly when I don’t do it. So I’ve simply resigned myself to the fact that the benefits outweigh the negatives, so I continue. The day I tip the scale the other way (not my weight) and I don’t enjoy exercising and don’t reap the benefits, I’ll stop. I doubt that day will come any time soon, but I can dream. The lesson? Do it until you don’t benefit from it anymore.

Determine Your Happiness

I was watching a show on television featuring three 22-year old burn victims. They had suffered severe burns as toddlers and endured a great deal of pain. Despite their physical suffering, the young ladies said they wanted people to know that they determine their own happiness. Now, after I finished crying like a baby, I had to share that message. If they can say that after so much suffering, it encouraged me to encourage you to “determine your own happiness”.

Look for the Rainbow

I was exercising at one of one of my favorite spots, Haines Point, where the city has a series of large sprinklers to help water the tress and grass. While it makes my walk/jog/run a little more difficult (it’s a chore to avoid being drenched), it provides a little inspiration. You know it doesn’t take much for me to get excited since I look for something good everyday, big or small. I saw a rainbow!! When life is not what you want it to be, always look for the rainbow.

Distracted From Madness

Sometimes a thought enters your mind and takes up residence. When you’re angry or have negative thoughts on a loop, you need to evict them as soon as possible. Allow a nonsensical distraction to help you. Count the number of vowels and syllables in a word or make up words. It doesn’t matter what you do because the point is to take your mind off of the offending thoughts. Soon you’ll forget what was troubling you.

Revisit “Try”

This is my disclaimer-I know I’ve told you to eliminate the word “try” from your vocabulary and life as much as possible because it gives you an automatic out. Well, some of you have driven yourselves to the brink of madness with this little exercise. I don’t want you in that place, so that’s the reason for the revisitation. It’s okay for you to use the word “try”, but don’t use it to make excuses. I want you to “try” new adventures and experiences because if you don’t, you won’t know if you’re going to be successful or have a successful failure. So, starting here, right now, I’m encouraging you to “try”, just don’t use it as an excuse not to attempt or complete things in your life.

The Happy Moment

Some days beg for a break from the rat race, so take a Happy Moment whenever you can. It doesn't have to be a physical "getaway", but just a moment (or two or three or more) when you stop, think or do something that that just makes you happy.

What's in a Name?

DISCLAIMER-This is just for fun and implies no endorsement of, accuracy or safety for the site listed below-just fun. Also, I am not saying that there are no other "Darnita's" out there-I actually know of a few; I used my entire name for the search. I'd love to hear from you if your name is "Darnita" or you know someone with that name.

As a child, I hated my name. It was "too unique" and people always mispronounced it. I always found this strange since it had no unusual consonant combos or even a string of vowels to cause confusion. It's pronounced as spelled-D-A-R-N-I-T-A). To this day, I still have to correct people, especially those who for the life of me, can't see (or pronounce) the "R". I jokingly say that since my mother paid for the "R", it should be used!! As I grew older, I formed a greater appreciation for my unique identifier-my name. Just for fun, I checked this site, which I'm sure you've seen in some form or fashion, or received in an email.

I truly am unique and so is my name!! What about you?
